Michael’s desire to serve the public was nurtured through leadership programs such as Leadership Spartanburg (2005 Graduate) and Leadership South Carolina (2008 Graduate and Board of Trustees Program Chair). Michael is also a member of a number of local, state, and national bar associations. He is the past President of the South Carolina Black Lawyers Association, President of the Donald James Sampson Bar Association (a National Bar Association Affiliate Chapter), Member of the American Bar Association Advisory Panel, served regionally as a Past District Justice (District XXV-South Carolina and North Carolina) for the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity and is the immediate past Chair of the Minority Caucus of the American Association of Justice (formerly the American Trial Lawyers Association). He is a Fellow and Board Trustee (ex-officio) of the Pound Civil Justice Institute and serves on the national board of the Civil Justice Foundation.

Leadership South Carolina was established in 1979 by the Governor’s Office and the South Carolina business community. As the oldest and most respected of the statewide leadership programs in the state, Leadership South Carolina provides gifted and highly motivated South Carolinians an opportunity to advance their leadership qualities while broadening their understanding of issues facing the state.

The Pound Civil Justice Institute was established in 1956 by a group of American trial lawyers to honor and build upon the work of Roscoe Pound (1870-1964). Pound served as Dean of the Harvard Law School from 1916 to 1936, and is acknowledged as the founder of the discipline of sociological jurisprudence. Through its programs, the Institute works to give lawyers, judges, educators and the public a balanced view of the U.S. civil justice system.

Commissioner on the City of Spartanburg Human Relations Commission

Purpose:
It is the mission of the HRC to promote respect, appreciation, and understanding of diversity among all people in our community through education means, while equally promoting fair and just practices in local government and among the various social, economic, religious, cultural, ethnic and racial groups in Spartanburg.

Board of Zoning and Appeals (BZA)
Purpose
The Board of Zoning and Appeals has the authority to hear appeals by any resident of the City of Spartanburg relating to administrative decisions of the zoning administrator. Also, the Board has the power to grant or deny applications for variances and special exceptions.
